The 2 Best KRUPS Coffee Grinders – Are They Worth The Money?

To a coffee lover, the difference in taste between fresh and stale coffee is huge. The shelf life of both ground coffee and coffee beans is far shorter than people seem to think.

While I won’t claim that my palate is sensitive enough to tell the difference between beans ground yesterday or today I will say that grinding my own beans has made the most difference to my coffee of the many things I’ve tried.

The aroma comes from various oils and compounds that oxidize fast. Apparently once they evaporate the taste goes with it. Which is why fresh grounds are always the best.

Using an electric mill like the Krups coffee grinder makes the process both faster and easier than cranking an old-fashioned hand powered coffee grinder.

I don’t know about you but when you want coffee, waiting is usually the last thing I want to do.

But let’s be honest, the majority of “features” of electric coffee grinders are just gimmicks. After all, all they do is grind coffee. So all you really need is something decent that will dependably do the job without ruining anything or desecrating your currated counter aesthetic.

KRUPS coffee grinders check all of those boxes (and a bit more).

Personally, I wouldn’t buy anything else so let’s take a quick look at the best KRUPS coffee grinders so we can see which of them is the best fit for you situation.

What We Looked At / How We Narrowed It Down

First off, let me sell you on KRUPS. While I haven’t heard much about German coffee, I have heard lots about German engineering and quality.

KRUPS has been dominating the food and coffee preparation industry for over 170 years (since 1846 to be precise).

They design much more that coffee grinders they have the chops to design something as simple as a coffee grinder that will last forever.

Sounds about like what we want.

So let’s talk about the individual features that KRUPS puts into their electric coffee grinders.

Grind Quality/Adjustments

Although it’s a common feature, not all coffee grinders let you adjust the coarseness. KRUPS grinders come in two varieties: a manual grind adjustment which (in theory) give you infinite adjustment and ones with a dial that have a discrete number of settings.

The advantage of having a dial is that you can get the exact same coarseness of grind every time. Instead, I simply do my best to grind my beans for the same amount of time every time.

Being able to control the the grind of your beans also allows you to control the consistency of your coffee. While drip coffee makers work best with a fine powder, French presses call for coarse granules. Each brewing method has an ideal grain sizes so it pays to have as many adjustment options as possible.

Burrs vs Blades

Coffee grinding mastery calls for a decent knowledge of coffee mill types. The two main ones are burr grinders and blade grinders.

Since I don’t have mastery and I assume you don’t either I’ll give you the quick version: blades are more common and do the job just find but burrs and supposedly better and preferred by coffee affienados.

A blade style coffee grinder works much like a little blender to chop up the beans. The main problem is that it can heat up (destroying some of the oils) and creates too much dust.

Burrs give a consistent even ground without ruining your beans.

Honestly, you’re probably fine with either one but having a KRUPS coffee grinder with burrs at its center will give you much more to brag about when your lord the quality of your coffee over your visitors.

Capacity

While capacity isn’t a huge issue (you can always fill it up again and grind for another 20 seconds) but it’s nice to be able to grind a large amount if you’re making coffee for a group.

While none of the KRUPs grinders that I owned or have tested have a built in scale they all have a similar capacity which you will become familiar with very quickly.

I would tent towards a smaller capacity grinder as you’ll want to grind your beans everyday to have them at maximum freshness.

Really, those are the things that make the biggest difference. KRUPS just does it better than everyone else.

Since coffee grinders are so similar, I narrowed down KRUPS line to only two options that fit very different needs. Firstly, the one I own and, secondly, the one that is for people who drink way more coffee than me. If such a person exists.
